This project sees to challenge conventional democratic structure by applying the Jungian framework of the self to society. The site is clearly articulated by this framework through separation, materiality and design in order to effective unify human consciousness, governing bodies and ultimately the state.
The syzygy of these three areas of democracy are represented as the shadow, ego and self. Together, they lead to a self-articulating and self-regulating society. The collective state hall of democracy stands as a symbol for projection of the individual's unconscious shadow onto the essence of Ego present in government, creating a unified self.
The Ego
The ego building is designed to be more angular, brutal and raw in appearance. This was done to symbolise true thought, grounded thinking and concreteness in decision making based on activities occurring in these spaces.
A grand space defined by transpersonal motives to interfere with the exercise of right, will and the intention of the mind.
As you step onto the floating stage, the individual ascends to a higher plane of consciousness and conversation
This space is designed to be grounded in thought (concrete materiality)
But free and open in discussion (transparent roof, stage is floating)
The Shadow
Designed to be more fluid in thought, softer and welcoming to individuals with government queries and issues. This was done to make light of the individual’s unconscious shadow, to support the participation of social criticism to the democracy which benefits the state
The shadow represents everything the individual refuses to know or acknowledge about themselves. Such as issues regarding the state or communities that haven’t been brought to the attention of the government.
These sections of the site help individuals imagine figures of light through the darkness, making their unconscious thoughts and issues conscious to the state
